The Flute Range The range of flute notes spans three octaves from middle C on the piano (also called C4) to C7. If you’ve got a longer B foot joint, you’ll be able to reach a low B (B3).
How many note can you play on a flute?
If you have a regular (standard student classical flute) C flute with a C foot joint and you travel chromatically upward through the 3 full octaves you’ll have 36 notes. There are 12 notes to the chromatic scale, but the bansuri cannot play all 12 notes unless some holes are only covered halfway. That’s why they are made in 12 different keys. If yours is marked as a D bansuri, that should be correct.

If the music is written in bass clef (for low instruments), then you 100% cannot play it on the flute. Unless of course you are able to read bass clef. In which case just play the music up an octave or two (or three!). Also, music written for low instruments is in a totally different style to music written for flute.

Unless you play those low notes up the octave, in which case, it will work, but will just sound a bit weird. The flute has one of the highest ranges of all instruments. So you probably won’t find music that is too high for the flute.
Can a flute play harmony?
With practice you can produce two part harmony and even two part counterpoint. If you choose the singing pitch to coincide with the harmonic you want then this will resonate within the flute and make the harmonic easier to produce.
Why can’t I play G on my flute?
With a jeweler’s screwdriver that fits the “G” adjustment screw (in the photo it shows a Philips screw but many flutes have a slotted screw), turn it 1/8th of a turn clockwise and try playing the G again. If it plays, you are finished. If not repeat the screw adjustment another 1/8th turn and try playing again.
