What is a lamp wick?
A warm beautiful oil lamp light starts with the right wick. Oil lamp wicks absorb and transport fuel oil to the top of the burner for combustion. Without oil wicks that fit properly the promise of light falls short. Most wicks are 100% cotton wicks made in the USA; unless otherwise noted.
How does a wick lamp work?
They work in the same way as a candle but with fuel that is liquid at room temperature, so that a container for the oil is required. A textile wick drops down into the oil, and is lit at the end, burning the oil as it is drawn up the wick.
Does the wick size matter on a oil lamp?
The other dimension that you must consider, length, can be summed up pretty quickly; a little too much is a lot better than not enough. If your wick cannot reach the fuel in your oil font, it will dry out and extinguish itself. B & P Lamp Supply’s wicks are pre-cut to 7 1/2″ to 8″ long in most sizes.

Are oil lamps safe indoors?
Yes! Oil lamps are capable of being used safely in indoor areas if used properly. Oil lamps are alternatives to electricity and are perfect to light inside rooms in the dark without the need for electrical lighting.
Can you use string as a wick?
You can treat homemade candle wicks with oil or salt but even plain cotton string works perfectly as candle wick. Cotton string candle wicks burn for a long time with a steady flame that doesn’t soot.
How long should a wick last?
Tip: This should be performed once or twice a year. Each wick is almost four (4) inches in length, so after 2-3 trimmings you’ll need to replace the wick. The wick should be changed if the lighter does not light properly or if the ignition process has to be repeated multiple times.
