What is Agile patency capsule?
What is Agile patency capsule?
The Agile Capsule is a test that enables the doctor to determine if your intestines are free of obstructions. You will swallow a vitamin-sized capsule that naturally breaks down after 30 hours. The Agile capsule has been ordered along with the PillCam SB (Capsule Endoscopy).
What is a patency capsule test?
What is a patency capsule test? A patency capsule test safely determines whether an object the size of capsule used for a capsule endoscopy can pass through your intestine.
What is the purpose of the patency capsule?
Abstract. The patency capsule is a radiopaque, dissolvable diagnostic tool, similar in shape and size to small bowel capsule endoscopes. It was developed to offer a simple, safe, efficient, and accurate evaluation of small bowel functional patency.
When does patency capsule dissolve?
The PillCam Patency capsule consists of dissolvable components, surrounding a tiny Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag that can be detected by X-ray. The capsule starts to dissolve about 30 hours after ingestion.
How long does it take to pass a PillCam?
A: The disposable capsule makes its way through the rest of the gastrointestinal tract and is then passed naturally and painlessly from the body, usually within 24 hours.
How big is the patency capsule?
The patency capsule is a dissolvable capsule with the same size as the Pillcam SB3 capsule [26×11 mm]. It is composed of a lactose body mixed with barium to make it radio-opaque and a radio frequency identification [RFID] tag whose small size [3×13 mm] allows it to pass through even narrow strictures.
What is in a patency capsule?
The capsule is made mainly of barium sulphate and lactose anhydrous. It contains a so called radiofrequency identification (RFID), which can be detected via an extracorporeal RFID scanner. 30 hours after ingestion a built-in timer opens two small holes in the capsule’s surface.

What happens if patency capsule gets stuck?
If the capsule stays in your body (is retained) for more than 30 hours, it will then dissolve into small pieces that can pass naturally through your intestine. However, if you have a narrowing of your small bowel, the capsule can get stuck at that point and lead to bowel obstruction.
How do you know if the Pillcam has passed?
Check the blue blinking light on the recorder every 15 minutes. If it is not flashing, call 410-583-2614. Do not attempt to adjust the recorder yourself. Check your bowel movements during this period to see if the capsule has passed prematurely.
