An institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) is required by federal regulations for most institutions that use animals in research, teaching, and testing. The IACUC has a key oversight role, including the review and approval of animal use activities, and inspection of animal facilities.
What animals does IACUC cover?
Animal – Any live, vertebrate animal used or intended for use in research, research training, experimentation, or biological testing or for related purposes. A study, that involves the eggs and embryos of vertebrates, is not covered until those eggs hatch. However, larval forms of fish and amphibians are covered.

Who makes an IACUC?
The AU IACUC consists of a minimum of five members. The IACUC will be constituted and governed by the requirements and responsibilities for institute animal care and use committees set forth by PHS and NIH policies and the Animal Welfare Act. Members are appointed by the Institutional Official.
