Main definition. Skirting. Removal of sweat locks and other processing faults present from the outer section of fleece under instruction from the woolclasser eg. stained, unusable, or undesirable portions of a fleece.

What does skirting mean with sheep?

Once the fleece is removed from a sheep, it’s passed to a skirting table. At the skirting table, dirtier parts of the fleece from the sheep’s belly and rear are removed. This less desirable wool is put aside and sold for different purposes.

What is skirting the fleece?

Skirting involves removing all inferior wool from the fleece wool. Each fleece is a little different, but most fleeces will only need fribs (sweat points), short crutchings, topknots and stain removed, as stain is the worst type of inferior wool to leave on the fleece.

What is Cotted wool?

Cotted: Fleece which is matted together; causes processing problems. Crinkle: Waviness/crimp in the individual fiber; usually the coarser the fiber, the less crinkle.

What does mulesing free wool mean?

Mulesing is a practice in which skin is removed from the rear of the Merino sheep – without anesthetization – in order to prevent flies from laying their larvae on the sheep.

How do you make a simple skirting table?

Step 1: Starting with a empty table, place your table topper over the table. Step 2: Place your clips over the table edge and topper (usually one clip per foot). Step 3: Pick a starting point and attach your skirt to the first clip. Slowly work your way around the table and attach the skirting to the remaining clips.

What is skirting alpaca Fleece?

Skirting is the process of removing “junk” wool, stains, second cuts and vegetable matter (VM) from the wool fleece prior to processing it ~~ or offering it for sale.

What breed of sheep produces the finest grade of wool?

Merino. The ancestors of pretty much all fine wool breeds produce the finest and most valuable type of wool. Merino sheep have wool of fineness 17-22 microns.
