How SMTP works step by step?

(The SMTP connection is built on something called a TCP connection, which stands for Transmission Control Protocol.) From there, the SMTP client uses commands to tell the server what to do and transfer data, like the sender’s email address, the recipient’s email address, and the email’s content.

What is SMTP protocol in computer network?

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an internet standard communication protocol for electronic mail transmission. Mail servers and other message transfer agents use SMTP to send and receive mail messages.

What layer is SMTP?

Application layer
As with the other protocols and services discussed in this section, SMTP operates at the Application layer and relies on the services of the underlying layers of the TCP/IP suite to provide the actual data transfer services.

What are components of SMTP?

SMTP is generally integrated within an email client application and is composed of four key components:

  • Local user or client-end utility known as the mail user agent (MUA)
  • Server known as mail submission agent (MSA)
  • Mail transfer agent (MTA)
  • Mail delivery agent (MDA)

Where is SMTP used?

SMTP is used to send emails, so it only works for outgoing emails. To be able to send emails, you need to provide the correct SMTP server when you set up your email client. Unlike POP3 and IMAP, SMTP can’t be used to retrieve and store emails. SMTP is also responsible for setting up communication between servers.

What are the two components of both the SMTP client and the SMTP server?

Both the SMTP-client and SMTP-server should have 2 components: User-agent (UA) Local MTA.

Where is SMTP server?

You can generally find your SMTP email server address in the account or settings section of your mail client. When you send an email, with SMTP host Gmail or AOL, the SMTP server processes your email, decides which server to send the message to, and relays the message to that server.
