Each gyrus is surrounded by sulci and together, the gyri and sulci help to increase the surface area of the cerebral cortex and form brain divisions. They form brain divisions by creating boundaries between the lobes, so these are easily identifiable, as well as serving to divide the brain into two hemispheres.

Sulci and brain gyri are involved in increasing the surface area of the cerebral cortex forming brain divisions. This increase in the brain’s surface area permits more neurons to be packed into the cortex for information processing.

Sulci, the grooves, and gyri, the folds or ridges, make up the folded surface of the cerebral cortex. Larger or deeper sulci are termed fissures, and in many cases the two terms are interchangeable. The folded cortex creates a larger surface area for the brain in humans and other mammals.

This theory proposes that neuronal connections that develop during the second trimester produce localized fiber tension which draws densely interconnected regions closer together. As regions of greater connectivity move closer together in an enclosed and rapidly growing brain, they form outward bulging gyri.

The deep furrows are called fissures and shallow ones are called sulci (singluar; sulcus). The ridges between the sulci are known as a gyri (singular; gyrus). Major sulci and fissures divide each hemisphere into four lobes: the frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal lobes.

Think of it this way: The brain’s surface area is 2200 cm2 (or 2.5 ft2), which can only fit in our skull by folding in on itself. As the brain grows and develops, the gray matter grows much faster than the white matter, which forces it to form gyri and sulci as it folds in on itself.
